Denmark | Copenhagen University College has introduced a new social work education program designed to better connect legal knowledge with real-world practice, aiming to prepare students for the complex decisions they will face in professional settings. The updated program, set to welcome its first students in August 2026, integrates law, social sciences, psychology, and practical training more closely than before. The goal is to develop graduates with strong professional judgment who can both understand legislation and apply it effectively in real-life situations.According to Anne Vang Rasmussen, rector of the institution, the reform does not reduce the importance of legal studies. Instead, it strengthens legal understanding by embedding it in practical contexts where social workers interact with individuals and families facing difficult circumstances.A key feature of the program is its emphasis on practice-based learning. Students will engage in simulations, role-playing, and case-based exercises that reflect real scenarios such as handling welfare cases, supporting vulnerable families, and communicating complex decisions clearly. The program also expands practical training opportunities, with students participating in two internship periods and closer collaboration between educational institutions and workplaces. This approach aims to ease the transition into professional life and reduce the “shock” often experienced by newly graduated social workers. The reform responds to the growing need for professionals who can combine legal expertise with empathy and social understanding, ensuring better decision-making in welfare services.
