Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in Ireland has launched a new free online course aimed at transforming how healthcare professionals respond to clinical errors. The course, titled Just and Learning Culture in Healthcare Contexts, is designed for both clinical and non clinical staff to promote patient safety through open communication and supportive workplace cultures. It encourages a shift away from blame focused systems toward environments where staff can report mistakes without fear while maintaining accountability.Developed by the Graduate School of Healthcare Management and supported by national development funding, the programme highlights how fear and isolation in traditional healthcare settings can prevent professionals from speaking up, ultimately limiting improvements in patient safety.Led by Kristina Brown, the course is structured into three sections that guide participants from understanding challenges to applying practical solutions. Learners explore human and system factors, barriers to reporting, and strategies to build psychological safety through real world scenarios and reflective learning. The initiative also reinforces the university’s broader commitment to accessible global education, adding to its existing offerings in areas such as AI and sustainable healthcare.
