Slovenia | Gregor Rihtaršič, a PhD student at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana, has been awarded a highly competitive research fellowship from the European Space Agency. The ESA fellowship is among the most prestigious programmes in Europe in the field of space science and will enable him to conduct independent research at ESA’s ESTEC centre in the Netherlands, one of its largest research facilities. His research focuses on dark matter, which makes up about 27 percent of the universe but has never been directly observed. Rihtaršič will study galaxy cluster collisions using gravitational lensing to better understand the distribution and nature of dark matter. His work includes observations of the Bullet Cluster and data from the James Webb Space Telescope. The fellowship recognizes his outstanding scientific achievements, including multiple publications in leading astrophysics journals and involvement in major international research projects. It also highlights the growing international recognition of Slovenian astrophysics.
