University of Jyväskylä has introduced new educational materials designed to help teachers and students explore forest soil ecosystems and biological communities through interactive and experiential learning methods. The learning package, created under the Evolution in Action project, focuses on understanding forest soil life, biodiversity, and ecological interactions. It includes structured teaching units such as scientific background lessons, hands-on soil exploration tasks, sensory learning cards about organisms, and art-based activities. The materials are designed to be flexible, allowing teachers to use the full set over multiple lessons or adapt individual components into other science topics. They are available in both Finnish and English to support wider educational use.According to project coordinator Elli Liimatainen, the goal is to make scientific knowledge about ecosystems more engaging and accessible in classrooms, encouraging curiosity and discussion about the importance of soil and biodiversity. The project is a collaboration between researchers and educators from the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Helsinki, combining science, art, and storytelling to support environmental education and awareness of ecological change. The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve understanding of evolution and human impact on nature while promoting active engagement in biodiversity protection.
