Belgium | Researchers from the University of Liege have discovered that amphibian metamorphosis causes significant and immediate weight loss in adult palmate newts, highlighting the hidden biological cost of transformation from aquatic to terrestrial life. The study found that females lose more weight and complete metamorphosis later than males, while climate related drying of wetlands may force more amphibians into this energy demanding process. Scientists say the findings could help explain long term evolutionary changes and the impact of climate change on amphibian populations.
