It happens every single day in the hallways, the cafeteria, and online. Bullying isn’t just some “rite of passage” we’re supposed to tough out—it is a living nightmare that completely ruins your life. A new study finally asked us how we feel about the way teachers handle bullying, and the truth is painful: the adults we are supposed to trust are failing us completely.
When someone is actively making your life a living hell, building up the courage to tell a teacher takes everything you’ve got. But when you finally do? They usually give the bully a weak tap on the wrist, tell you both to “just ignore each other,” or completely look the other way. It is incredibly insulting. That kind of useless intervention completely backfires—it just makes the bully madder and leaves the victim feeling totally stranded, exposed, and terrified of what will happen next.
This is creating a massive crisis of trust in our schools. When we see that speaking up changes absolutely nothing, it completely shatters our confidence. It triggers severe anxiety every morning before school, making us sick to our stomachs just walking through the front doors. We are the ones dealing with the panic attacks and the isolation while the bullies get away with it. Until teachers stop treating bullying like a minor annoyance and start taking real action, we are stuck trying to survive in a toxic environment completely on our own.
