Spain | We are constantly told that our generation is “digital native,” but the truth is we are being left completely unequipped for the real world. A massive new study tracking 11,737 secondary students using the ICILS database has exposed a brutal reality: our ability to survive in a digital society depends entirely on our gender, our confidence, and—most frustratingly—how wealthy our school is.
This is creating a massive student problem where your zip code determines your digital literacy. If you go to a school in a low-income area, you are automatically getting a second-rate education in the very skills needed to get a job. It feels incredibly unfair; we are being locked out of tech skills before we even get a chance to start our careers.
While the data shows girls are actually leading the pack in digital competence, the overall system is still leaving too many of us stranded. When schools lack the resources to teach proper digital literacy and responsible tech use, it triggers massive anxiety about our futures. We are expected to navigate a hyper-tech world, yet we aren’t being taught how to use these tools safely or effectively. Until schools step up with real workshops and equal tech training for everyone, the digital divide will keep pushing disadvantaged students further into the shadows.
