Helena Hansen, Professor and Interim Chair of Psychiatry and Biobehavioural Sciences at University of California, Los Angeles, discussed how health inequities in the US, including the opioid crisis, are shaped by long-standing social and political structures. She emphasized the importance of social determinants of health, structural competency in medicine, and the role of collective action to improve health equity and strengthen democracy. Hansen also highlighted the value of European-style welfare systems and social interventions to complement medical technologies.
