Sweden | Researchers at Lund University have mapped the genome of a rare carnivorous fruit fly that lives underwater in African streams and hunts other insects. The species, Drosophila enhydrobia, has not been seen in the wild since 1981, but scientists successfully extracted DNA from a preserved museum specimen in Switzerland. The study revealed how the insect evolved specialized sensory and genetic traits to survive in aquatic environments, offering new insights into evolution, biodiversity, and the scientific value of museum collections.
