
Austria | The Medical University of Vienna, together with Medical University of Innsbruck, Medical University of Graz, and the Johannes Kepler University Linz Faculty of Medicine, has reported a total of 16,880 applications for the 2026 MedAT entrance exam across Austria.This marks a notable increase compared to the previous year, highlighting the growing demand for medical and dental studies in the country. The MedAT exam, scheduled for 3 July 2026, is the centralized admission test required for entry into medical programs.Among the institutions, the Medical University of Vienna recorded the highest number of applications with 8,235 registrations, followed by Innsbruck, Graz, and Linz. The majority of applicants were female across all universities, continuing a recent trend in medical education.For the 2026 to 2027 academic year, a total of 1,950 study places are available, including medicine and dentistry programs. Out of these, 784 places are allocated to the Medical University of Vienna, with the remaining seats distributed among the partner institutions.The MedAT selection process includes multiple components such as scientific knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, as well as cognitive and social-emotional skills. Dentistry applicants are additionally tested on manual skills.To ensure fair access, Austria maintains a quota system, reserving most study places for EU applicants and those with Austrian secondary education qualifications. A small number of places are also designated for public service roles in cooperation with national institutions.Results of the admission test are expected to be announced in August 2026.
